How to Choose the Right Boiler

Don’t ask me why, but every time I’ve bought a house, there has been something wrong with the boiler! It is probably because I tend to buy wrecks which need doing up, but it also means I’ve had to organise choosing and fitting a boiler on many occasions!

The key thing to do first is to write down the average number of people you have in your home and what level of heating you have on, for example how many radiators and what times they go on and off, and also how many showers/baths you have.  XXX  House

It’s important to make sure you have enough capacity in your boiler so if someone uses a tap or switches the washing machine on somewhere else in the house, it doesn’t affect anyone having a shower. Ideally you will need a thermostatic shower for this, but a good quality boiler
can also help.

Once you have established the usage of the boiler, check out all the costs on-line. You don’t just pay for the boiler, there are all sorts of extras from filters to pipework and other bits and pieces required to make everything work.

House XXX On average, boilers cost from around £500-£2,000. The cost of fitting can double this amount. Check if you are eligible to buy a new boiler via the Green Deal so you can pay for the boiler overtime through your energy bill without any additional costs upfront.

Once you have an idea of what you need the boiler to do and how much it’s likely to cost, it’s worth getting the professionals in to quote for you. You will find vast differences between quotes. The last boiler I had fitted was in a two bed flat and we had quotes from £1,500 to over £3,000 – pretty much for the same job! We didn’t go with the cheapest as we went for the best boiler instead.

Compare the quotes like for like so you know what you actually need and anything ‘extra’ which is being charged. Make sure you have a guarantee not just for the boiler but also for the works done to fit it and don’t forget you will need a building regulations certificate to confirm it has been fitted by a
Gas Safe Registered engineer.
