A hint of summer, a dash of sunshine or maybe just a lack of rain, us Brits will use any excuse to get the barbecue out and we are not afraid to shell out on the equipment. Research from Rattan Direct, the national garden furniture retailer, has revealed that more than 40% of adults in the UK spend up to £300 upgrading their barbecues.

Almost 50% of people admitted that they invest the same amount into barbecue equipment as they do to their kitchen cookers despite only using their barbecues around 4 times per year. Imagine spending the same on a cinema seat as your favourite armchair at home, sounds mad doesn't it?!
Who spends the most on their barbecues?
Londoners
Scots
Irish
Londoners, Scots and the Irish spend the most money on their barbecues, however Geordies aren't so keen on splashing the cash and part with the least amount of money on barbecues and related cooking equipment.
Robert Fernandez, a spokesperson at Rattan Direct, said: “We are known for our love for BBQ, raining or not, when the weekend hits, our gardens turn into a party space for family and friends.
“However, it’s interesting to see how much we are actually willing to pay for our BBQs, especially when comparing the prices of our kitchen cookers, which we use on daily basis. The results are quite shocking.”
It is understandable that we love the idea of a fancy barbecue, who wouldn't fantasise about good food, a few drinks and spending quality time with your favourite people? But is it really worth spending so much on something we generally use so little?
